Stand Up For Slapstick

24th June, Colston Hall

I imagine most of you will be aware by now that we are running a fundraiser on the evening of Sunday 24th June. It’s going to involve some big names in the world of Stand Up, all coming together to help support us in our mission to further awareness of the greats of silent, visual & slapstick comedy.

We are yet to confirm the whole lineup but have several big names already committed to joining us. These include writer and actor Marcus Brigstocke, satirical impressionist Rory Bremner, the deliciously funny Lucy Porter and the inimitable comedian and playwright Arthur Smith. All the above will be rubbing shoulders with Slapstick Festival favourite Barry Cryer who, of course, is one of the worlds greatest comic writers & the unchallenged King of the One-Liner. (And no, he didn’t write that himself.)

We are particularly indebted to one of our most dedicated supporters, Graeme Garden for coming up with the idea of the fundraiser & for dedicating a lot of his time helping to round up the team of comedians joining us for the night.

Chris (our director) and Graeme were on BBC Radio Bristol last week talking about the event. I web ripped the snippet of the show during which they were talking & uploaded it to our Soundcloud account (“A silent comedy festival with a SOUNDcloud account” I hear you cry! Well, yuuuuup, as it happens). You can stream it here look (“LOOK at an audio stream” I hear you cry” – yuuuuuup again.):

The Performers:

Marcus Brigstocke is a comedian, actor and satirist who has worked extensively in stand-up comedy, television, radio and in 2010-2011, musical theatre. Kids love him too – he’s made successful CBBC series.

Marcus’s most well known one liner (frequently attributed to other people) is this:

If Pac-Man had affected us as kids, we’d all be running around in dark rooms, munching pills and listening to repetitive electronic music.

Rory Bremner is an impressionist, playwright and comedian, noted for his work in political satire and for doing impressions of prominent British politicians.

He is also known for his work on Mock the Week, for the award-winning show Rory Bremner…Who Else? and also for the sketch comedy series Bremner, Bird and Fortune.

Arguably Rory’s finest comedic moment was when he rang up Margaret Beckett impersonating Gordon Brown & got her to reveal “embarrassing indiscretions”.

Lucy Porter is an actress, writer and, of course, a comedian. She has performed at many festivals & clubs around Britain. She has also been a regular voice on BBC Radio 4 in various panel shows.

Her stand-up style is characterised as “chatty and charming” while dealing with adult themes from a woman’s point of view.

Lucy is also the creator of Screaming with Laughter, an afternoon mother and baby comedy club. The club tours the country to play for parents with infants under a year old.

(Having said that it’ll probably be advisable to leave the under 1 year olds at home for this event).

Arthur Smith is an English alternative comedian and writer. Apart from stand up comedy he has also been a radio presenter on various Radio 4 programmes and comedies.

In 2005 Arthur turned down a lifetime achievement award from the Perrier Award organisers & issued the following quote:

“Comedians rather dislike the Perrier Awards and the public aren’t interested. Basically, they wanted to tell me I was old and cool; well, I know that already, and anyway, my ego is bloated enough.”

Barry Cryer of course needs no introduction to Slapstick Festival regulars like yourselves but you’re going to get one anyway.

Here’s a list of some of the people Barry’s written jokes for:
Dave Allen, Stanley Baxter, Jack Benny, Rory Bremner, George Burns, Jasper Carrott, Tommy Cooper, Les Dawson, Dick Emery, Kenny Everett, Bruce Forsyth, David Frost, Bob Hope, Frankie Howerd, Richard Pryor, Mike Yarwood, The Two Ronnies and Morecambe and Wise. Gulp!

When he comes on stage he will probably say “I know what you’re thinking, that Brad Pitt’s let himself go a bit”.

As ever, for up to the minute news please check out our social media accounts, we are active in both Twitter land & Facebook land so check us out there if you aren’t already on it.

I’ve searched throughout your site and found no mention of ‘Ronnie Golden’ under ‘Performers’. I wonder if you could rectify this glaring omission. ‘Ronnie Golden’
